juwi to construct solar park for Jabiru in the Northern Territory

The project will integrate 3.9MW solar generation and a 3MW/5MWh battery, with 4.5MW diesel generation to balance sustainability with reliability.

Juwi Renewable Energy Pty Ltd, the Brisbane-based subsidiary of German renewable energy specialist juwi AG, signed an agreement with Energy Developments Limited (EDL) to construct a high penetration solar hybrid power solution for the town of Jabiru in the Northern Territory. EDL will own and operate the Jabiru Hybrid Renewable Project, which after completion is expected to meet the town’s annual electricity needs with energy that is at least 50 percent from renewable sources. Construction will begin shortly. The diesel power station will be completed by the end of 2021, and the solar farm and battery will come online in early 2022.

Dave Manning, Global Head of Hybrid at juwi said “Hybrid power solutions offer the potential to significantly reduce the amount of fossil fuel power generation within the Kakadu National Park” juwi looks forward to working again with EDL and the local community of Jabiru to deliver sustainable energy for the region.

The Jabiru project will represent the 6th project juwi has delivered or that is currently under construction. Overall, the juwi projects Down Under now include an investment volume in excess of 100 million EUR.

In addition to the development and operation of wind and solar parks, an important growth segment for the juwi group is the construction of hybrid power plants for non-grid industries such as mines. In such projects, PV and / or wind power plants are supplemented with storage units. These can then be intelligently integrated into existing island networks using software developed by juwi, the “juwi Hybrid IQ”. "With our world-famous DeGrussa project, we have shown what renewable energy solutions can achieve," says Stephan Hansen, member of the board and responsible for the company's international business. Juwi is currently building a megawatt solar park in South Africa to supply a gold mine with its own electricity.

About the juwi group

The juwi group is one of the leading specialists for renewable energies. The German renewable energy pioneer has been offering complete project development as well as other services relating to the planning, construction and operation of renewable energy systems for 25 years. The juwi group's business areas include projects with wind and solar energy as well as hybrid systems with storage systems for industrial applications.

Juwi was founded in 1996 in Rhineland-Palatinate. The company is now based in Wörrstadt near Mainz and has been part of Mannheim-based MVV Energie AG, one of the largest municipal energy providers in Germany, since the end of 2014. The juwi group employs around 850 people worldwide and has projects on every continent. There are branches in: Germany, Italy, Greece, South Africa, the USA, Japan, Australia, India as well as the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

To date, juwi has implemented more than 1,000 wind energy systems with an output of more than 2,400 megawatts at around 180 locations worldwide; in the solar segment there are around 1,800 PV systems with a total output of more than 3,000 megawatts. Together, these energy systems generate around nine billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year; In purely mathematical terms, this corresponds to the annual requirements of around three million households in Germany. For the implementation of the energy projects, juwi has initiated an investment volume of almost ten billion euros over the past 25 years.
